Single use phase out.

The Australian government previously announced plans to phase out single-use plastic by the end of 2025. This is a huge move forward for Australia in its attempt to reduce waste. In Australia alone we produce 2.5 million tons of plastic waste each year with 84% ending up in landfill.

The Queensland governments ban on single-use plastic's commences on 1 September 2021 banning single-use plastic straws, drinking stirrers, cutlery, plates, bowls and polystyrene food and beverage containers. With similar laws coming into place soon with all the other states or territories, this is a huge step forward in the right direction.

What can you do?

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE

Just getting started, here are my top 5 tips in reducing waste.

  1. Skip the plastic produce bags a the supermarket. All that fruit and veg can go straight into your trolley. Alternatively BYO reusable bags.
  2. Buy in bulk. Not only does this save you money but it saves on excess packaging.
  3. Invest in a good quality reusable water bottle, bottled water is one of the biggest contributors to plastic waste.
  4. Purchase secondhand, and donate goods to keep them out of landfill.
  5. Buy only what you need.
